The Strand

Experience

Overview

The Strand is the largest independent bookstore in New York City, and it has over 23 miles of books to prove it. People love this bookstore so much that they get t-shirts, bookmarks, tote bags, and pretty much anything featuring the Strand logo. This bookstore wanted to thank their customers by giving them a memorable experience, and a unique gift.

The Objective

To give customers a new experience and a different kind of souvenir, one that feels more personal and unique than the typical t-shirts or tote-bags.

The Print-a-Poem

The solution was to create an interactive structure that would surprise users with a little gift; I call it the Print-a-Poem. This structure is a shelving unit, but it's also a poem-printer-fortune-wheel! (A real mouthful.) The idea was born out of that handful of receipts you jam in your wallet after every shopping trip. Wouldn't it be nice if instead of a boring grocery list, we had our wallets full of poems?

Thanks to the adaptation of the Strand’s color palette and visual language, the final product didn’t need to have a logo stamped on it to feel "Strand."

Sustainability matters

I always knew of sustainability, but thanks to this project I know more about the consequences of plastic, and what it's best alternatives are.

Brand hierarchy

I learned about the types of parent/sub brand relationships.

How the Device Works

After inserting a quarter, the machine will prompt you with a book fortune wheel on its digital screen. Once you land on a book, you'll get some information about it, and who the writer is. Finally, the Print-a-Poem will print a receipt featuring the full text of a poem from the chosen book.

Doing good for the world

This machine doesn't only give people a lovely gift, but it also does good for the world. Every coin inserted goes towards a donation to the Books for Kids Foundation.
